Amarylis - 117k
This is my mom's Amarylis. It's funny, they're not even in the genus Amaryilis, they're really Hippaestrums, and the real Amarylis we call Madonna Lily instead.
Go figure.
Barberry - 43k
This is a funny bush. These have become very popular for landscapes, usually the red variety. This is the wild form that grows in the forests of eastern America. Believe it or not, this is actually related to Mayapples, those little umbrella shaped plants in the woods in spring.
If you look at the flowers of the Barberry bush, they are exact miniatures of the Mayapple blooms. At first glance though, they have nothing in common.
Bloodroot - 66k
Bloodroot gets it's name from the blood red juice in it's root. If you break the root it actually looks like it is dripping blood! The plant is related to poppies, and the blooms are exceedingly delicate. The blooming season only last a few days for all the plants in an area. That's usually how it goes for blossoms of such etherial beauty.
Blue Squill - 73k
This is just a little spring bulb that hardly anyone grows. It's not huge or obnoxiously attention grabbing, so it gets passed by too often. I like it because it's small and fits in with the native plants of early spring.
Caterpillar - 64k
This is a cool caterpillar. I don't know what he will become but I'm guessing a moth of some type. I didn't touch it to see if the spines were for real.
Chickweed - 65k
This is just the little lawn weed that people spend so much money to get rid of. They are hated almost as much as dandelions. I can't figure it out. I love the dandelions. They are bight, prolific, and hardy. Indeed they require no care at all. Heck, they're even edible! What more could you want?
They look so nice when the sun hits them in the spring.
Chionodoxa - 79k
This is called Glory of the Snow sometimes. It falls in the same category as the Blue Squill; small and quiet, yet beautiful if you stop and look.
Coltsfoot - 83k
Coltsfoot is neat because it blooms before the leaves come out in early spring. The leaves are large and rounded and are said to look like the footprint of a colt, and that's how they get their name.
They used to be used as cough medicine.
Cool Amarylis! - 70k
This is the best shot of my mom's Amarylis that I got.
It's just a really good shot if I do say so myself!
Cranefly - 71k
Craneflies are those big mosquito looking things that fly around in the evening. Before I took this photo I didn't know they had green eyes.
